National Disability Employment Awareness Month: Workers Enjoy Second Chance

The economic downturn continues to hurt nonprofit organizations that are assisting disadvantaged individuals. An automotive supervisor led a crusade to assist disabled workers during National Disability Employment Awareness Month and shares her book proceeds with a nonprofit organization.

With millions of individuals out of worker, many people forget that disabled individuals are dealing with higher unemployment rates. October marks National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), which is a national campaign to raise awareness about disability employment issues. In most circles, the plight of this group is forgotten.

Noriko Iwanaga Chapman, who is a production control supervisor for DENSO Manufacturing (TN), helped to restore $75K of government funding to the Tennessee Vocational Rehabilitation Center (TRC’s), located in Maryville. In 2009, the Maryville TRC was ranked at eighth in contract sales in Tennessee. Its mission is to provide services that help lead individuals who have a physical and/or mental disability to employment and are designed to meet individual needs.

As a result of a college project, Chapman became connected to this organization. She observed, “I was inspired by the staff and by individuals with disabilities who were trying very hard to learn work skills and seek permanent employment.” DENSO Corporation, headquartered in Kariya, Aichi prefecture, Japan, is a leading global automotive supplier with customers that include all the world’s major carmakers. With more than 200 subsidiaries and affiliates in 35 countries and regions (including Japan), DENSO had worked to assist the nonprofit organization with a contract that allowed disabled workers to earn income. In reality, DENSO was offering these workers a second chance.

Chapman was sympathetic about second chance opportunities anyway. Chapman, a mother of two, with over 16 years’ experience in the automobile industry, and is also a cancer survivor. Chapman notes, “In 2009, when I was diagnosed with cancer, it was devastating to think about the disease and an unknown future. A year later, I survived and gained my health back and was given a second chance to live.” She regained her strength and managed to attend Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) and enrolled in its MBA Program. It was the start of her quest to help nonprofit organizations.

Her research was the main inspiration for her new book, Second Chance: An In-depth Case Study on Nonprofit Organization’s Resource Allocation and Operational Maximization. It is co-authored by her LMU professor Dr. Daryl D. Green. The authors pledged 30 percent of the proceeds to a local nonprofit, assisting disabled adults. Chapman states, “It was a perfect project that God prepared with the perfect timing, a convenient location, hard-working people….It was a “Second Chance” for me to go back to school and resume my career after surviving cancer.”

Chapman’s personal story inspires others including disabled workers to face their circumstances with courage. If organizations and savvy media personalities want someone who can encourage people during National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Chapman would be an excellent selection.

For more information about the book or the author, please contact Noriko Chapman directly at 865-379-6455 or Chance2.Noriko@gmail.com. Ms. Chapman is available for media interviews.

How To Keep Your Career Moving

A career is not something that happens to you from out of nowhere. It is not served to you on a silver platter. It is something that you build through years of doing what you love doing. It is a product of preparation and careful planning. To many people, it is what defines their existence.

Some people make several career changes in their lifetime. This sometimes works, especially if you are looking for a better position and higher pay. But the risk here is that you might make a wrong turn and end up with nothing. When this happens, you find yourself starting all over again.

Career changes can be avoided if early on you have already decided what career to pursue. Preparing early for a career gives you a lot of time to make some detours and commit some mistakes, if it has to come to that, with still plenty of years ahead to spare.

And once you have chosen a career, you have to work real hard to strengthen and advance it. Here are some tips that you can follow to keep your career going.

Get yourself a mentor. You have to accept the fact that you can’t possibly learn everything by yourself. Be humble enough to admit that you need a mentor, somebody who can guide you in your career. This person could be somebody who has survived the challenges in his career and passed life’s many tests with flying colors. A mentor hands over to you the tricks of the trade and the secrets to his success.

Have a role model. This is different from a mentor in the sense that you don’t seek advice from a role model. A role model is one whose qualities as a person you want to have for yourself. It may be the way he carries himself in the office, the way he dresses up, the way he speaks and gets along with others. He must be somebody who occupies a higher position than yours.

Learn new skills. Do not stagnate in where you are now. There is always something new to learn in your field of work. Take advantage of the trainings, workshops and seminars your company provides to employees. Keep on researching about your career. The Internet is a good source of learning what’s new in your field of work.

Do networking. Become a member of networking organizations in your area. Groups like the National Association of Professional Women ( NAPW ) offer their members all sorts of activities to help them grow in their career.

Nicoll Curtin Recruitment Grows Its European Division

Nicoll Curtin, the IT recruitment agency, has grown its European Division in response to strong demand for skilled professionals to fill a range of IT jobs for clients throughout the region, in particular its core market, Switzerland.

Since the company incorporated in Switzerland and received its Cantonal and Federal licences, Nicoll Curtin’s European Division has focused on growing both new and existing business channels. Traditionally strong in the IT contract jobs arena, the company is now expanding into recruiting for permanent roles in its core investment banking and financial services sectors, predominantly for IT jobs in Zurich and Geneva.

The company has also brought on board a number of new clients in the Commercial sector, with a focus on the pharmaceutical industry; new clients include Novartis, Tecan and Swisscom.

To ensure the team is able to fully service the requirements of these new clients, Nicoll Curtin has taken on two additional bilingual recruiters. Fahad Ansari, Head of the European Division, said:-

Agility UK Opens New Office In Sheffield

Agility UK, the health and safety and employment law specialists, have opened a new office and training venue on Broad Street, Sheffield.

The new office will serve as a health and safety training and employment law training venue for businesses in and around the local area. It will be staffed by specialists in the field who will aim to provide comprehensive advice, support and training courses to clients in and around Sheffield and the wider South Yorkshire region.

The opening of a Sheffield branch affords Agility UK further scope to expand its existing client database and signals the launch of a new campaign to establish further offices in locations across the UK.

Keith Townsend, Managing Director of Agility UK, commented on the company’s plans for expansion, both in Sheffield and in further potential regions across the UK: “Our extensive market research has shown that businesses like to be supported by firms who operate in and around their local area. However, we have also found that those same businesses are reluctant to use sole traders, and this is often because those sole traders aren’t support by the same back up and indemnities as a larger, national corporation.”

Townsend added: “To help combat this potential conflict of interests, Agility UK is offering the services of an established nationwide business, specialising in the delivery of comprehensive health and safety and employment law solutions, but with an interest in operating on a regional basis. This gives our clients the benefit of a personalised, local presence while also offering the back up and infrastructure of a truly national organisation.”

As part of a wider group of companies offering a variety of tailored solutions for businesses, Agility UK will be sharing its new premises with partner company, Windmill Leasing. Together, the companies will offer comprehensive service solutions around health and safety and employment law advice and training courses, as well as specialist business car leasing and fleet management.

Agility UK is active in implementing a strategic plan to become a truly national provider of tailored solutions with a local presence. As such, there are plans to explore the potential opening of a new regional office in the south of England later in 2011.

Hays Suggests Oil And Gas Employers Must Consider Other Skilled Workers To Fill Staff Shortfall

Hays has reported that employers should start considering employing people from other energy and engineering sectors if they are to successfully fill the increasing number of jobs being generated in the oil and gas industry in Scotland.

The comments come as the sector continues a steady recovery, generating a number of new technical and engineering posts. However, there is currently a shortage of people with the necessary skills and experience to fill the posts, caused partly by the lure of better paid positions overseas, combined with a lack of new engineering graduates.

According to Graeme Fyfe, director of Hays’ Oil and Gas division in Scotland, employers will need to compromise on non-essential aspects, take a much broader view of their skills requirements and also ensure they have a long-term strategy to address the issue with an investment in training and development.

“The good news is that energy projects that were previously on hold are now being reinstated and offshore fields which reduced production are coming back online,” said Fyfe. “But there is currently a serious shortage of people with the rights skills and experience to fill the posts that are being generated. This applies across the board, but the pinch point is in mechanical and project management roles. Almost without exception, our clients are looking for skilled project engineers who tend to be at the heart of any manufacturing process – but they simply aren’t available.

“There isn’t time to train them or wait for the next influx of graduates, so in the meantime employers should take a more strategic approach and consider if people from other industry sectors could fulfil these jobs, albeit with some additional learning. For example, we have recently placed a project manager from construction into a manufacturing role in subsea systems and equipment. Another candidate with experience in a heavy forged products environment has relocated to Aberdeen and is now working for a company that manufactures offshore equipment.”

According to Fyfe, people who work in construction, defence, automotive and other large complex engineering industries are often already working to the high standards that are required in the oil and gas sector. They therefore have many transferable technical and project management skills. This is more cost-effective in the longer term, he believes, than opting to offer higher salaries or delaying projects.

“There needs to be a balance between encouraging more people into science and engineering and employers being much more strategic in their forward planning. Not only is there a shortage of new talent but a ‘brain drain’ is causing many of our skilled engineers to relocate overseas at a critical time when we need the right people in place to grow the industry.”

The Uses of Leadership Tests and Management Training

The biggest complaint about most management training efforts is that they are not measurable or quantifiable. There is often no way to know if an organization is creating effective leaders or not. Indeed all that often happens after many such efforts is that the people in the classes fade back into the company and disappear.

This can be avoided by applying effective leadership tests. Leadership testing involves identify potential leaders and surveying those who have taken the leadership training to see if it is effective. One of the best tests is to see the graduates of past management training efforts have actually taken on management roles.

Another is to survey them and see if they are actually putting the techniques, strategies and skills they learned in the training sessions to work. At the same time you can ask if those methods actually work or not and what results they have achieved in the real world.

If no discernable effect is detected you can assume that the training efforts have failed. If the results are negative you can also assume that you have failed. Yet you may also determine that some techniques work and some don’t.

This way you can decide which techniques are appropriate and which are not. In some cases, you may learn that only part of your training has actually worked. In others you may see that it has come close and failed. You might also learn which training is appropriate to your organization and its people or not.

A final leadership test that you can apply is to do an employ survey asking what leadership or management skills are lacking in your organization you might be surprised. You might learn that managers are not communicating with workers or that managers are unsure of what to do.

Once you do that you can redesign your training efforts in order to produce the results that you actually want.

English Speaking Jobs in France

toplanguagejobs.fr, Europe ‘s Number 1 Specialist Provider of English jobs and English speaking jobs sums up the the French jobs marker.

Aytac Irfan of TopLanguageJobs commented:

“English speaking jobs are becoming more and more wide spread throughout Europe and especially France and Brits turn to the continent for job stability.”

A small percentage of Britons and leaving to mainland Europe because of the looming double dip recession in the UK.

A growing majority of Britons speak French as a second language or at least have proficiency in French due to the teachings they received at grammar school.

Because of this a small majority is seeking work in France and especially Paris. English is a great first language to have, but similarly French is a great second language to have.

Europeans and Britons are looking to reach out and expand their horizons in a tough economy by making tough decisions.

We expect not too many Britons to ‘jump ship’ over the next quarter. But certainly it is a chance for people to try something new and find new opportunities.

Management Training Encouraged in order to Jumpstart Future Leaders

Management training is seen by business owners as the best way to develop young stalwarts that show promise into fitting leaders for tomorrow.

Any good and responsible workplace knows the value of a few good leaders. There is a standard notion that says only a few good leaders are ever really born. With this idea in mind, management training has then been developed to make leaders instead of waiting for them to be born into this world. More and more corporations are beginning to realize the benefits of investing in a good management training program.

Good leaders come and go and to keep an organization running smoothly, there must be someone waiting in line to become the next big thing. Experts agree that it is better to train someone who is already immersed in the office culture or has been a long-term employee than taking a risk with someone completely new. It is also relatively cheaper to train an existing employee than to hire a brand new one for top management position.

Other benefits of sending an existing employee to management training include: loyalty on the part of the employee to the company, a solid foundation built on trust between the company and the employee and lesser risk over-all. If a company is looking to build someone up to be its next manager or supervisor, it is best to do a company evaluation to find out if anyone on their payroll is a good fit or shows promise.

Qualities top executives must look for in finding an individual to train are: competence in work and habits, good moral conduct and standing, an honest and open behavior, dedication to the job, a willingness to learn, enthusiasm and good energies. These are some basic qualities that a young leader must possess that would make him fit to undergo management training. A good management training program will sharpen one’s skills and make him fit to be a future leader.

Some early management training can already be done by supervisors upon spotting a rare bird in the flock. By way of mentoring, inspiring and teaching this person, older and more experienced employees are already building up his confidence and bringing out the spirit of a leader in him. It always pays to find time to set promising leaders aside and mentoring them. Any workplace can benefit from a true leader and the effects can be beyond imagination.

Employee Surveys Encourage Leaders to Put Their Best Foot Forward

One of the most important things about being a leader is being able to take honest feedback through employee surveys. While opening up oneself to the criticism and judgment of others is no small feat, it is essential in improving one’s growth as a leader.

A leader may strive to have all the qualities expected of him in order to set a good example in the workplace. He may be inspiring, challenging and he may possess a good humor. He may be punctual, sets meetings at the right time and he may delegate tasks well. In his mind he may be living up to the best of his abilities and to the expectations of his colleagues and subordinates. But this is only in his mind.

A good leader is willing to open himself up to the criticism of those around him, especially those that he works with. Employee surveys are one way to gauge the true effectiveness of a boss or manager. They are questionnaires usually given out at different intervals of a fiscal year. Everyone from the delivery man up to the accountants and the top sales manager are required to fill in a survey that may pertain to a particular person holding a position of management.

Do keep in mind that these employee surveys are in no way meant to attack a person’s character. The questions that are normally listed down on these have to do with the abilities and qualities of the said person in relation to the workplace. Most of the questions serve to examine whether he is in conduct with the workplace code and employee handbook. There will also be queries on whether he is performing his tasks well or living up to his job title. These questionnaires are usually fuss-free and should be done in an hour or less.

A survey conducted on the effectiveness of employee surveys showed that companies that have integrated these into their development strategies have seen a marked difference in their top management’s performance. The rationale behind this is individuals tend to perform better when they know that they will be evaluated afterwards. It is also the concept that makes shows reality shows very compelling to watch. As the contestants know they are being watched, they tend to put on their best foot forward

All in all, employee surveys should be given a chance by all workplace environments looking for an increase in office productivity and top level management performance.

UK May Move Further Out Of Line With Most European Countries On Encouraging Workers To Eat At Lunch Time By Removing Tax Relief

The Government may take the UK further out of line with virtually all major European countries by removing tax allowances to employers that can encourage workers to eat a proper lunch.

Employers can currently claim 15p (0.18 Euros) on luncheon vouchers they provide to staff. In Germany employers receive €3.10 per employee per day: the French Government allows € 5.21 Euros; in Italy the allowance is €5.29; in Switzerland€5.80; in Belgium it is €5.91 Euros and in Spain the allowance is a remarkable €9.00 per employee per day.

Country and Euro per day allowance
Austria = 4.40
Belgium = 5.91
Bulgaria = 1.46
Czech Republic = 2.00
France = 5.21
Germany = 3.10
Greece = 6.00
Hungary = 2.60
Italy = 5.29
Luxembourg = 5.60
Poland = 2.37
Portugal = 7.26
Romania = 2.00
Slovakia = 2.70
Spain = 9.00
Switzerland = 5.80
Turkey = 5.39
United Kingdom = 0.18

Following a Budget announcement by the Government in the Spring, there is at present a consultation period before UK tax relief is due to be reduced to zero in the 2012 Finance bill.

This is despite Dame Carol Black, the Government’s national director for health and work, backing a recent YMCA report which criticised Britain’s ‘no lunch break’ culture and found that one in three people skip eating at work.

According to research by Bupa published earlier this year, UK companies are losing close to £50million a day in lost productivity as workers fail to take a lunch break. Bupa Clinical Director of Occupational Health, Dr. Jenny Leeser, also recently said: “In challenging economic times, the UK work force is in overdrive and the lunch break is falling by the wayside. Instead of taking a break to refuel, workers are using props including chocolates and sweets and caffeinated drinks to get them through the day.”

Andrew Adams of leading employee benefits and flexible benefits provider Edenred commented: “It is widely accepted that eating a proper lunch and taking a break are important for staff to be productive at work. Yet the Government is planning to go in the opposite direction to most European countries by removing the minimal level of tax relief it currently grants.

“Surely if the Government is truly committed to encouraging workers to eating properly at lunchtime and to supporting employers trying to maximise productivity in this tough economic climate, it should be increasing rather than removing tax relief on luncheon schemes?

How to Achieve Success

The good news is that there is no secret formula or magical key to success. Anybody can learn how to achieve success by developing such personal qualities as persistence, strength, high moral values and hard work.

Persistence or tenacity could be the most important ingredient in success. Most successful women achieve their goals not because they are the smartest or the most capable but because they simply did not giving up. In many cases, all that is required for success is to stay in the game.

Quite a few women do not develop this quality – instead they get discouraged and loose their motivation. This occurs because these women do not have any successful role models. It is very easy to get discouraged and frustrated when you go it alone.

Therefore one of the best ways to learn how to achieve success is to spend time around successful women. Simply seeing and talking to others who have achieved their goals and overcome obstacles can motivate you to stay in the game.

Networking for Success
Organizations like the National Association of Professional Women, community groups, business groups and alumni associations are a great place to meet other successful women. They are also a good refuge from a male dominated business environment.
